While I was in Austin training with New Wave Jiu Jitsu, I learned a lot. In fact, it was too much, as I took notes on each training session, I had so much information that I only got through the first few days of notes before I had a hard time deciphering my own instructions!
I must have seen about 40 or so techniques during my time there, but I have only used one. It also happened to be the very last move I came across in training just before leaving for the airport. It also happened to come by the hands of the No-Gi king, Gordon Ryan.
I had learned the Crane Pass, aka the Gordon Pass, from John Danaher during class. At the time, I found it interesting. However, it was only on that last day while I was rolling with Gordon that I saw the true value of it. Gordon was working his pressure passing against me, and I was able to defend my guard just enough to keep him from passing. After one near back take, he seemed to quickly pop up and was suddenly on my side. In a blink of an eye, he got passed - using the Crane Pass.
Since I have returned from that trip, I have used that Crane pass in nearly every roll with great success. It is quite simple, and very effective for breaking the half guard, even against knee shields. While I'm not a master of this yet, I have gotten proficient enough where I feel confident in showing it to you as I use it. I would definitely recommend checking out Gordon Ryan's half guard passing series, as I believe he teaches it there.
