No AccessThe Hook can be a tricky punch for a beginner to learn. It can be easily mistaken for a loopy arm punch, which would become a slap instead of a solid power strike. The key to the lead hook is realize that the arm position should be fixed as if your arm is in a cast to an open L shape. So the rotation is going to come from rotating your hips and shoulder. As you see here, I first focus on hip rotation, which is going to bring weight from the lead leg to the rear leg. Next is shoulder rotation, as we rotate the shoulder to bring our fist across our target. What's great about learning it like this is that you can quickly see that when you work good shoulder rotation, your hips will want to join along to help your body rotation. The two combined in unison result in a powerful left hook.
