For MMA, playing guard is not always the best or safest strategy. It's easy to end up stuck in your guard and getting ground and pounded. For this reason, I like using the over hook guard, especially in MMA.
From the over hook, it is difficult for your opponent to strike - even head butts are off the table. It's also perhaps the best striking position for the guard player, as they have easy access to elbows to the head.
However, there are a lot of great attacks from the over hook guard, especially when the opponent is trying to strike.
